Introduction to Benchmark III

The students at Weber Institute decided to synthesize and e valuate our nuclear non-proliferation research by developing two fictitious nations who might approach the development and deployment of nuclear weapons differently. Thus, we decided to create to utopian vision of a perfect nuclear world. One, Peacenik Island, favors a peaceful approach to a nuclear weapons program by promoting world peace, unity, and the non-existence of nuclear weapons in their country. The other utopian vision, Nucleartopia, promotes a world that sees nuclear weapons as a necessity to prevent further violence. Although the two promotional websites from these countries represent the project and culmination of our research, the propaganda posters (provided as links from the main pages of the two utopias) allow the viewer to understand the competing views of contemporary nations (e.g. Japan, Iran, North Korea, etc.) who approach the topic differently.

Introduction to Benchmark II, Objective I

The goal of Objective I was to understand and explain the various international treaties (e.g. NPT, CTBT, etc.) and organizations (e.g. IAEA, etc.) involved in the non-proliferation of nuclear weapons. The project for this objective was to take the entire CIF group to downtown Stockton and survey people on the topic of nuclear weapons. A QuickTime interview was added to this objective and is displayed on the Weber Institute website.

Introduction to Benchmark II, Objective II

The goal of Objective II was to understand and explain the challenges to nuclear disarmament. Japan, Brazil, and China are prime examples of countries that have forsaken nuclear weapons, dabbled in obtaining them and have proliferated the technology of nuclear weapons. The physical project task was to create a peace treaty that will deal with the controversial issues that currently exist between Russia and the U.S.

Introduction to Benchmark II, Objective III

The goal of Objective III was to understand and explain the types of nuclear arsenals that exist in the world today and how they are controlled. The physical project for Objective III was to create a MovieMaker film explaining the various types of nuclear arsenals from selected countries.

Home Objective 1 Objective 2 Objective 3

The students at the Weber Institute of Applied Sciences and Technology have sought to understand the history of nuclear weapons and the harmful threat that they pose to mankind.

Benchmark I Objective I, begins with a concentration upon those who have created nuclear weapons via the Manhattan Project and the development of the Soviet Union’s nuclear program. Additionally, a pictorial glossary of the various types of nuclear weapons and weapons systems is provided at the end of the first objective.

Objective II begins with a look at the process and the stages by which nuclear weapons can be produced. The investigation of these issues describes how nuclear weapons can be used in detrimental ways.

Objective III begins with descriptive analyses of various countries who have embraced nuclear weapons.
